Temple Mount

Temple Mount (aka Mount Moriah, "the Noble Sanctuary," and the "Holy of Holies"): location of the first (c. 967 BCE-c.587 BCE) and second (c. 515 BCE-70 CE) Jewish Temples; location according to Jews and Christians where Abraham was to have sacrificed his son Isaac; location of the Ark of the Covenant; location of the third and final temple to be built to accompany the coming of the Messiah; and location of the Islamic Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosque (together "The Noble Sanctuary" or Al-Haram al-Qudsi al-Sharif), from which Muhammad ascended to Heaven in his night journey. Bounded on the west by the Western Wall (aka Wailing Wall), symbol of the Holy of Holies, the holiest location in all Judaism, and on the north by the Via Dolorosa ("Way of Grief"), the path taken by Jesus to his crucifixion.
